Anxious for the New Season? Attend a Golf Show!

For many golfers in northern parts of the United States, this time of year can be the most frustrating. You can see the light at the end of a long, cold, off season, but mid-April never seems to arrive fast enough.

So to help cope with that last month or so before the new season starts, I recommend a trip to the closest golf expo. About a year ago, a few golf buddies and I attended the Connecticut Golf Show. This is where Stinky Golf Chris and I were first introduced to holographic balance wristbands.

While the bands were met with mixed reviews (Chris felt his helped, while I felt mine did not), it sure was fun talking (and dreaming) about how a little silicon wristband could help your golf game! That's the thing with golf shows - there's a treasure-trove of ideas for the upcoming season.

Let's take golf balls for example; As you may know, I'm a bit of an eco-friendly guy. So when I spotted the Dr. Mulligan's booth, I was intrigued. I've know about refurbished (or recycled) golf balls, but assumed they were not up to the quality of new balls. No so. I purchased two-dozen Nike One balls just on looks alone. At $20 a dozen, that was a steal. But what about the playability? Yep - that was up-to-snuff too. I couldn't tell the difference between the used and new ones.

Another golf buddy purchased one of the magnetic wristbands at one booth, while we all stepped into the long-drive simulator. There was a long-putt contest where if you sunk it, you won a free round a golf (this year there's a marshmallow chip shot contest); a row of hitting bays to test-out the latest gear; and a cigar booth that will supply your next tournament with not only cigars, but pretty ladies to sell them!

Of course, there are tons of golf resorts offering great deals on stay-and-play packages (and many had a raffle going for a free weekend). Even if you don't win, it gets the travel juices flowing for this summer's golf trip.

So don't sit at home anxious to start the season, find a golf show near you to attend. And a show in a big city isn't necessarily a better show either - for example, I've been to the NYC golf show (in Madison Square Garden) and it was rather pathetic compared to the one up here in Connecticut. Even the show up in Boston (New England Golf Expo), was on par with the one here in CT. So no need to travel far - the one closest to you should suffice in scratching that golf itch.

So while I probably won't be out on the links yet in March, I am excited about attending the golf show - hey, the 30 bucks I save on balls will make up for the $30 I blow on another golf gimmick!

You Carry WHAT in your Golf Bag?

Several years ago, I was in the middle of hacking up a course with a few of my golfing buddies. We're standing on a secluded tee-box somewhere on the back nine, when one of my pals announces he'll be right back.

He walks over to his golf bag, unzips one of the pockets, reaches in and pulls out [I kid you not] a roll of toilet paper. A few seconds pass as the rest of us stand there with bewildered looks on our faces.

Finally, Stinky Golfer Chris breaks the silence and exclaims: "Dude, we're about to tee-off. We're not gonna wait for you to take a dump in the woods!"

"No, no. It won't take long," our golfing buddy assures us, as he begins to head into the underbrush. "It's only a courtesy wipe."

Only a courtesy wipe. As gross and ridiculous as that sounded, the rest of us knew what he meant and why he meant it. In fact, I'm pretty sure we all collectively thought the same thing: "Hmmm. A courtesy wipe. That's actually not a bad idea."

As I watched my friend trudge back out of the woods and grab his driver, I pondered (in addition to making a mental note to not shake his hand or high-five him after the round was over) was it really that crazy to carry a roll of toilet paper in your golf bag? And for that matter, what else should I be carrying in there that I currently am not?

Flash-forward to present day and I believe I now have a golf bag stocked with the essentials (the trick is to carry what you need without adding any significant weight): First, there's the obvious stuff: Balls (I usually carry a dozen - hey, you never know when you'll have a bad day), tees (20 or so), a stainless steel water bottle; sunscreen; an umbrella; and a wind breaker. Oh, and I also carry the rain hood that came with my bag. We all carry that stupid thing, don't we? I'm not sure why - It's not very practical to put on and take off and I rarely play in the rain (which now makes me wonder if I really need the umbrella).

Anyway, on to the not so obvious stuff: I carry a few band-aids (you never know when a callus will crack or a blister will form). A divot-repair tool (I have a neat one from Victorinox); Two cigars (and a lighter); An extra pencil; a couple extra soft spikes; and a never warn waterproof Srixon floppy hat (eh, I got it for free). I used to carry the rules of golf booklet too, but have since replaced that with the app version. Oh and get this - I carry a gag exploding golf ball...seriously - This thing bursts into a powdery cloud when struck. The same one has been in my bag for 10 years (I'm still waiting for the perfect time to pull the old ball switcheroo on someone).

So, that's what I'm packing (still no TP though). And actually, now that I've created this list, I remember I need to put some Tylenol or Advil in my bag too (crap...I'm getting old).

What's in your golf bag?

My Balls are Freezing

So my father-in-law was visiting from out of state a couple of weeks ago. One of the days during his stay, I began explaining some of the things I do to prepare for the start of the golf season (keep in mind this is a man who's never played golf in his life).

In the middle of this conversation, he walked over to my refrigerator, opened the freezer and began looking inside. After staring at him for a few moments (wondering if my golf talk was boring him), I asked if he needed something. Here was his reply:

"No, I was just looking for your golf balls."

WTF?

Me: "Pop, why would I keep my golf balls in the freezer?"

Him: "Well, I've always heard if you freeze your golf balls, they go farther. So I assumed all golfers froze their balls."

Just then my wife came in the kitchen and our conversation about frozen balls ended. But for the rest of the day, I couldn't shake the notion of golfers everywhere (save for me) having an unfair advantage all these years because they've been freezing their balls.

That night, I decided to do a little research on this frozen ball theory. Turns out, my father-in-law isn't the only one who had heard of this little trick. A Google search returned many people asking the same question: "Does freezing your golf balls make them go farther?"

Man, what people will go through to add a few extra yards to their drives. And with such an easy solution (after all, most of us have freezers), it's no wonder so many were interested in if this trick was fact or fiction.

I'm not sure how many of you have heard about freezing golf balls, but my research has led me to believe this is pure fantasy. In fact, studies have shown the exact opposite is true: Cold balls will actually travel a shorter distance (on average) than warm balls! Check out the video below from FSN Sports Science:

So I guess freezing your golf balls isn't a good idea. But what about freezing your golf clubs? Sound ridiculous? Well, don't say that to cryogenic expert and founder of the Cryogenic Institute of New England, Robin A. Rhodes:
Using a process called Nitrofreeze Cryogenic Tempering, Rhodes deep-freezes golf clubs at 300 degrees below zero inside a 24-cubic foot chamber in his Cryogenic Institute of New England office at 60 Prescott St. Deep-freezing of metals, a process first used by NASA in the 1960s, changes their microstructure, relieving stresses and producing a more consistent and uniform material, Rhodes said. As a result, the company claims that golfers get a better feel, less shaft twist for improved accuracy, a larger sweet spot and more distance.

The price tag to give your set of clubs a deep freeze? $230. Hey, it's a small price to pay for adding some distance and feel (I just don't want to know what late, great actor my clubs were cryogenically frozen next to)! You can read the full article HERE.
