Golf Clubs?! I Got Your Golf Clubs Right Here...Merry Christmas!

In my post a couple weeks ago, I broke some balls about getting fitted for clubs. It was an attempt at being funny about shooting poorly and blaming it on the clubs. I know, I know...I won't quit my day job. Comedy's not my schtick. All jokes aside though, having a set of clubs that you are comfortable with definitely benefits your game. The only problem was that I had to figure it out the hard way.

Growing up with non-golfers, my only exposure to the game consisted of maybe catching Watson, Norman, Strange or Stewart on TV for a hole or two on Sunday afternoon. Oh, wait...I can't forget my mother's cousin, Vincenzo from Jersey, who traveled around with a nine iron in the trunk of his Lincoln Continental. Never quite understood that...nor do I want to. Nevertheless, that little taste of golf was enough to spark a curiosity. The problem was, how do I get started in this game?

Enter Stinky Golfer Greg. He pretty much gave me my first set of clubs. You see, if I asked for a set of clubs for Christmas...well...read the title. Basically, I was on my own. Fast forward 12 years or so and I'm glad it worked out this way. You don't want someone who has never played golf to buy you clubs. Especially me, I'm a lefty. And Greg just happened to have a left-handed friend who bought a new set a few years earlier, but he wasn't using them. That made all the difference for me. Instead of a mix-match set of garage sale clubs, I had a complete set of cavity backs.

Now, in the beginning, your clubs might not make a difference, but as your game develops they will. I'm not saying you have to spend a fortune on clubs, but if you are going to play on a regular basis, I would consider investing in a set and not necessarily settling for a set. Hey, it's the holiday season. Treat yourself or a loved one to the fine game of golf.

Hit'em long...yell Fore!!! Happy Holidays!

Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Thanksgolfing

I love Thanksgiving. I love spending time with the family. I love stuffing my face so much that I struggle to keep my eyes open at the dinner table. I love no longer struggling to keep my eyes open on the couch after dinner. I love having turkey sandwiches for the next couple of days. It's an all around great time of year. The time of year to give thanks and appreciation to your friends and family.

But today I want to take the time to give more specific thanks. I want to take a moment to give thanks to everyone in my golfing life. I'll start with my wife.

I have many things for which I should give thanks to my wife. First off, thanks for using your work hook-ups to get me my new golf clubs! I'm looking forward to the chance to use them more often than I did this year.

Second, thanks again for using your hook-ups to get me and my buddies on to a few courses for some sweet discounts! There's nothing like playing a nice course for less than half price!

And third, thanks for not busting my stones when I golf rather than clean out the garage, mow the lawn or any other household chore that I should get done.

Thanks to Josh, my oldest, for using his birthday money to purchase his own set of clubs. By doing this, it gave me the chance to take him out for his first round. I hope it's the first of many.

A long overdue thanks to stinky golfers Greg and Dog for introducing me to this game all those years ago. If it wasn't for you guys, I may have never taken up golf and consequently, I would never have known what I was missing!

And last but not least, thanks to everyone who takes the time to read the ramblings we post here. Whether it's serious, comical or just downright nonsense, we thank you for appreciating and/or understanding exactly what we here at golfstinks are trying to do. Without you, there is no us.

This will be my last post before the holiday, so Happy Thanksgiving everyone, and thanks again for your much appreciated support.

In Case Of Emergency, Pop Trunk

So if you're like me and you drive a smaller sports car, you understand trunk space is at a premium. I remember one occasion when I was picking my wife up from the airport. She had two bags with her (Insert your favorite mother-in-law joke here).

Problem was, I forgot to take my golf clubs out of the trunk. Uh-oh. There's no way the larger of the two bags (Insert your second favorite mother-in-law joke here) was going to fit. Luckily, I do have a backseat. It's a bit of a tight squeeze, but it is a backseat nonetheless. So after a bit of a fight with the larger of the two bags (again...joke) we were on our way home; disaster averted.

My wife doesn't understand why my clubs were in the trunk anyway, considering I hadn't played recently and had no plans to play again soon. I try to explain to her that you never know where you're going to be when a round of golf breaks out. So it's best to be prepared. She thinks I'm an idiot. She's probably right.

Now when I say my trunk is small, I mean it's small. It's so small in fact, there is actually a diagram on the underside of the trunk lid showing how to fit two golf bags in there! I guess somehow the great minds at Infiniti must have know this car would eventually find it's way into a golfers driveway!

But the fact that a diagram showing golf bags in my trunk exists at all is what I find astonishing. The diagram does not explain how to fit luggage in the trunk, although I wish it did. Instead, it shows two golf bags. So obviously, some research went into finding out how many people travel with golf clubs in the trunk. And considering the diagram found its way into my car...I guess it was a relatively high number.

Now it's not just the clubs themselves that take up the space - it's the shoes, the umbrella, a couple of boxes of balls and whatever other random things are in there. Throw all of that crap into one small space, and you can see how disorganized it can get. Anyone else have this problem? Well how about this for a solution - don't pick your wife up from the airport!

Sorry honey; just kidding. Seriously though, finding a solution to this problem would be pretty great, right? Finding it cheaply would be even better. But finding it on a website better known for selling dining tables would be completely unexpected! But sure enough, here it is:

Pretty sweet, eh? I can squeeze just about every golf accessory I have, short of my clubs, into that one convenient package. And no kidding...it's just a click away while surfing http://www.diningroomsdirect.com/.

See, that site is a branch of http://www.csnstores.com/. They have just about everything you can shop for on that site - furniture, household goods, clothing and yes, golf accessories. If you're on the dining room site, you just click the tab at the top that says "view all 200 csn stores" and then search "golf trunk" on that page. I've done it for you HERE.

Not bad for under $60! But you know what could make it better? What if it was free?! Well, for one lucky Golfstinks reader, it can be. As with all of our great Golf Stinks blog giveaways, simply head over to our Facebook page and "like" us. That's it! That's all you have to do to enter! We'll then randomly choose one lucky winner, and we'll be in touch!

One warning though - once you have this thing, you no longer have any excuses for allowing your trunk to look as bad as it does. You no longer have the ability to say "I'm sorry honey, there's no way that will fit in my trunk. We'll have to take your car." And you will certainly have no excuse for leaving any bags (you know what to do here) sitting on the airport curb.

Swing 'til you're happy!

*Update - In response to the comment asking if the diagram on the inside of my trunk actually exists, here you go! I couldn't believe it when I saw it either...

Stinky Golfer's Wives; We Do Exist

What's it like being the wife of a stinky golfer? Interesting...to say the least. I am sure by now many of you know who I am. My name is Jenn, but I may be better known as "Mrs. Stinky Golfer Chris." That's us to the left - an actual wedding photo. Am I a cool wife or what?

Just to clarify any previous statements made by my husband, it's not that I don't like golf, I just have no interest in it...at all. When Chris comes home from golf, I ask him what he shot. He'll say, "Horrible, I shot 103!" I'll say something to the effect of "Aw, that sucks." But really, I have NO idea what that means. Not even a little.

Now, I know what some of you are thinking. "Wow, she shows interest even though she could care less." Here's why I really do it. Because if I act like I understand what he is saying, he won't try to explain it to me. It's not that I don't want to know, but with Chris it will turn into physics, logistics and every other type of -ics, and I'll just end up even more confused. You see, he is the guy who knows who was King in some far off never-never land that existed for like three hours and only seven people have ever heard of. I've learned the hard way, when he can answer 85% of the questions on Jeopardy, you tend to not ask for explanations.

In previous posts, Chris has let you all in on my career of sorts. Yes, he is correct, he gets awesome perks from me working overtime. When he wants new clubs, or wants to play a course, I make a call and *poof* I am the best wife EVER! But see, this is all part of my plan. I am sure many of you have seen the post regarding my purses. Well, you see, if I call and make a tee time for him, I can head off to the outlets, maybe buy a purse, spend all day with my girlfriends and be back home before he ever knows the difference.

If he shoots bad, he'll come home annoyed and throw himself on the couch to play some Call of Duty. I guess blowing up 13 year old internet junkies makes it better. If he shoots good, he comes home happy, smiles and says "Let's go out to eat!" I ask the all important question; "How'd you shoot?" He says "98!" I say "Awesome!" I'll throw in a quick "Look what I got at the outlet ..." He says "Great! Let's eat!" Now, that to me is a win-win.

In all honesty, I love that my husband golfs. He gets out there with his friends, has a good time, makes some jokes and comes home with some sort of satisfaction. I'll never be that wife that calls when he is about to tee off, asking when he will be home. I would not want him to call and nag me when I am out on my shopping spree!

Being the wife of a Stinky Golfer is awesome. I hear great stories, laugh all the time and never hear my husband complain about something he loves!

So, I would like to say, thank you Honey for liking something that makes you happy most of the time. I cannot wait until you come home from using your new fitted clubs (you're welcome) and tell me you shot an 80! I think that day I could probably get a new car out of him..., or at least new shoes!

Custom Fitting Golf Clubs: Worth It?

I'm approaching a very special time in the career of a golfer, and I want to share it with everyone. It wouldn't be fair to keep such a joyous occasion to myself. I need to tell everyone about the next step in my golfing life.

You see, I'm finally putting down my off-the-shelf clubs (the same set I've been playing with since I took up the game), and getting myself fitted for a new set!

Once again, I have my wife to thank. For the umpteenth time, via the benefits of her place of employment, she has come through with something to benefit me. You see, I've mentioned previously that she works for a company that manages or owns several golf courses throughout the state. So I'll be headed to their top course to meet up with the pro who will promptly measure me up! It's a combination Fathers Day/Birthday gift...and a damn good one at that!

Now, as excited as I am for this, I also have no idea what to expect or what to look for. I'm sure the pro is going to help me understand those things, but it's still a funny feeling. So I have a few questions with which some of you in the golf blogosphere may be able to help me out?

1. What exactly am I looking for? What I mean by this is, how do I want to feel with these clubs in hand? Should I feel like I'm holding something as light as a feather or something of significant mass? Should I feel like I'm holding anything at all or should I feel as if it's simply an extension of my arms?

2. In my club shopping, swinging and testing-out of clubs, I've become a bit partial to a brand or two. But what happens if I've tried out a few and decide on one, but once it's custom fit to my specs, I no longer like the feel of it? Is there a possibility of that happening? One would have to think so. It's like if I was to test-drive a new car, decide I like it, and have something on it customized. Then, once I get it out on the road, it feels different due to the customization and I don't like it as much. Has anyone ever heard of this happening or experienced it for themselves?

3. Is it worth it to do this at all? I mean, I'm getting a relatively large break on the cost of all of this, but it's still not going to be cheap. Is a nice set of custom-fit clubs that much better than a nice set of off-the-shelf clubs? Especially considering I'm a stinky golfer? It's something to think about.

Keep in mind, if not for my wife's connection, this is something I likely would never do. I honestly never really cared about getting custom-fit clubs. As a matter of fact, I find it quite humorous that so many people who are not professional players, and never will be, spend the money to do this. So for a player of my caliber...I find it to be absolutely absurd!

I suppose I don't understand it because I don't take the game as seriously as many others do. Now don't take that statement the wrong way. I very much enjoy playing the game. I also very much enjoy playing softball every Tuesday night, but I'm not about to go spend several hundred dollars on a custom bat, or have a custom glove tailored to my hand! So why do it for golf?

Well, the answer is, I wouldn't. But I have the chance to do it now for less than what I was planning on paying for a nice set of off-the-shelf clubs. So that puts me in a different position. I would almost be foolish to NOT do this, right?

So next weekend holds the big day. Provided I can find a bit of free time, I'll be in the pro shop, likely asking these same questions. If anyone can give me any insight before going in, it would be very much appreciated!

Afterward, give me some time with the new clubs and give me a chance to see how much difference they make and if they are, in fact, worth it. I'm sure I'll then follow up with my verdict.

Help! I Need New Golf Clubs!

So I have this set of golf clubs, right? Thing is, I've had these golf clubs for some time...going on twelve years now. Actually, it's the first set of golf clubs I had ever purchased when I was originally introduced to this great game.

The set came with irons three through nine, three woods (driver, 3 and 5) and a pitching wedge. Two of those woods (the driver and the three) are long gone...as is the wedge. The driver was once replaced with a nice Callaway Big Bertha. I lost the ability to hit that straight and it no sooner found its way to eBay. I replaced the wedge with one I received as a gift and added another one later.

Putters have come and gone. Bags have done the same. But what's remained consistent through all of the change surrounding them are my original irons and trusty five wood. They do the job, and my five wood off the tee is probably the most consistent club in my bag.

I want to sit here and say I have this emotional attachment to my clubs, and that's why I still have them. I want to say they are good enough for me and new clubs aren't going to make me any better or improve my game at all. I also don't want to lie. Neither of the two previous statements are true. I want new clubs. I need new clubs. I just can't friggin' afford them!

Now I know some of you are probably saying to yourselves the same things I've said to myself. "I don't need to spend $1,000 to get a good set of clubs" or "Just get a decent set of irons for now and worry about the driver and other stuff later." I've got that down. I've tried a bunch of clubs and have pretty much narrowed it to a few relatively affordable sets. The problem is...I still just can't friggin' afford them!

So my new quest has been to discover WHY I can't afford them. I've narrowed that down to three issues:

#1 - My own foolishness with my money:

A few years ago, I got into a car accident. I was uninjured, but my car was totaled. The other guy's insurance company however, did not want the car. So they offered me a nice amount of money to just keep it - an offer which I gladly accepted. The car was drivable, just a bit unattractive. But hey, it was paid off and the insurance company gave me more money to keep driving it! So I have this nice sum of money now. But instead of doing something responsible with it - like buying a new set of golf clubs - I decided to purchase a sports car that I had wanted for a few years. So now, terrible gas mileage, many high car payments and expensive maintenance bills later...I have no new golf clubs. Good job Chris.

#2 - My wife:

Hey guys...do any of these look familiar to any of you?

Well, for your sake...I hope not. But unfortunately, I'm sure they do. My wife calls them purses or pocketbooks. I call them the bane of my golf existence. My wife somehow believes they are necessary. I can understand they are necessary...in limited quantities. I do not understand why so many are necessary! At any point in the day, there are at least two of these in her car, several more in our bedroom, maybe one or two in the family room, and who knows how many in random closets throughout the house! The cost of these things interferes with the cost of my new clubs! How do I know how much they cost? I don't. But what I do know is I have to order Rosetta Stone to pronounce the names! That makes them too expensive. Honey, if you're reading this....we have to suspend your next purchase or two. You have enough. I need clubs. I'll bet if my clubs were made by some famous Italian fashion house I would have them by now! Of course, if that was the case...she would have taken up golf already.

#3 - My job:

See, the problem with my job is...I currently don't have one. I guess I don't really need to go into much detail here. The fact that I don't currently have a job is explanation enough. But, since roughly 1 out of 7 people in the country play golf, and 1 out of every 10 adults in the country are unemployed right now...I'm sure I'm not the only golfer currently dealing with this problem.

So there it is in a nutshell. Three reasons I have not purchased new clubs, and may not purchase them anytime soon. Getting a job would help. So if anyone is hiring, please hit me up. I'm willing to do just about anything if the pay is good enough, as long as it involves keeping my clothes on. It's not that I wouldn't take my clothes off for money....it's just that you don't want to see it. Trust me.

I just want new clubs.
